What Is In A Kayak Name?

Kayaks have become very popular water-sport vehicles. They are transportable and there are many more places to paddle than there are roads. It is no wonder then, with such versatility and destination choice, that kayaks, canoes and small boats make this section of the water-sports industry to be one of the fastest growing segments of the industry that there is.

Have you ever wondered how and why kayaks are given the names they have?

Consider Dagger kayaks as an example. The word conjures up a sharp instrument with a pointed tip. This makes some sense because the water is sliced when a kayak or canoe passes over the surface.

But 'dagger' has long had a part to play in things maritime. It was a steel bar which played an essential part in the launching mechanism of a ship. When the dogshore (another maritime term) was knocked out, the 'dagger' acted as a trigger which released the vessel and started her down the launching ramp.

And what about Liquid Logic kayaks? One could rationalise this to be the logical kayak to choose to go out in on the water. The word liquid conjures up the idea of flowing along, a good mental image to create in the mind of a prospective buyer.

Malibu kayaks might cause pause for a moment of thought. Until one realises that Malibu is the name of an affluent beach-front city in California with 27 miles of inviting Pacific sand, the ideal spot for kayaking excursions.

Originally, this author confused Malibu with Caribou. Caribou generate visions of an animal no longer able to roam around at will and would therefore be difficult to view. Maybe they can occasionally be seen from the open window of a vehicle out on the open road, but they may well be much easier to spot from the water in a wilderness area. These sort of places are generally best accessible by means of a kayak, canoe or small boat. (There are no kayaks called Caribou however.)

Ocean kayaks speak for themselves. Water, lots of it. Get out there and see it for yourself. A vast expanse which can be explored in an ocean crossing, or - much more interesting probably - circumnavigate some of the continents.

Native Watercraft kayaks is also a transparent kind of name. The original kayak was native to cold Canada, seaworthy and useful - in hunting for food primarily, but also for clothing - and the concept of the kayak has developed from there.

There are many different kayak names, but just one last one. Emotion kayaks. When you watch skilled whitewater paddlers, it does create emotion. One of them is a sense of awe that people really manage to do all that and still come out on top. Have you watched them descend waterfalls? There are a lot of online communities where videos of these exploits are posted. They are really worth watching as entertainment, but also to get some idea of the versatility of these adaptable little craft.

For these and many other kayaks makes visit:-
